- The Opening Ceremony of the 74th Festival de Cannes will take place on July 6, 2021.
- Annette & Leos Carax, Marion Cotillard & Adam Driver will open the Festival de Cannes.
- Annette, Carax’s first film in English, will open the Cannes 74th International Film Festival on Tuesday, July 6th.
- Chaired by the American film director Spike Lee, the Jury of the Competition will announce the winners at the Closing Ceremony on Saturday, July 17, 2021.
- The Official Selection will be announced at the end of May 2021.

The Festival de Cannes / Festival international du film (the International Film Festival) known in English as the Cannes Film Festival, is an annual film festival held in Cannes (France), which previews new films of all genres, including documentaries, from worldwide.

31 May, 1939
- On 31 May 1939, the city of Cannes was chosen as the venue for the celebration. The French government marked the beginning of the birth of the International Film Festival with the name Le Festival International du Film.
- The reason for the choice of Cannes was due to its tourism appeal as a French Riviera resort town.
- The main objective of this festival was to encourage the development of cinematographic arts and to foster a spirit of cooperation among film-producing countries.
- On August 31, it opened with a screening of the American film The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
- But on 1 September, the festival was postponed for 10 days due to German troops invading Poland. The situation worsened which led to the Second World War. The French government stopped the festival from continuing, so it was eventually canceled.
The year 1946-1947
- In 1946, the film festival was resumed. Twenty-one countries presented their films at the festival from 20 September to 5 October 1946, which took place at a casino in Cannes City.
- In 1947, the festival was organized as the "Festival du Film de Cannes", where films from sixteen countries participated.
The festival was not held in 1948 and 1950 due to financial problems.
The year 1951-1972
- In the year 1951, the festival was held in the spring to avoid direct competition with the Venice Festival.
- In 1959, the film Marche do was founded. This gave the festival a commercial opportunity. And facilitated exchanges between sellers and buyers in the film industry. Today, the festival has become the first international stage of film commerce.
- In 1972, Robert Favre Le Brett was named the new President, and Maurice Basie as General Delegate. He made significant changes in the selection process for the participating films, welcoming new technologies. Basie formed a separate committee for the selection of French films and foreign films.
The year 1978-1984
- In 1978, Gilles Jacob took over as General Delegate and debuted the first debut of either of the main events for the non-competitive categories, and the Caméra d'Or Award for the Uncerton Regard Section.
- In 1984, Pierre Vayot replaced Robert Favre Le Brett as the Festival's president. During his tenure, the festival began with films from more countries such as the Philippines, China, Cuba, Australia, India, New Zealand and Argentina.
The year 1987-1998
- In 1987, for the first time of the festival, a red carpet was laid at the entrance of the Palais.
- In 1998, Gilles Jacob made La Cinefundation the last part of the official selection. The aim was to assist in the creation of works of cinema in the world and to contribute to the entry of new landscape writers into the circle of celebrities.
- La Cinefondation was completed in 2000 as La Residence, where young directors could refine their writing and screenplay.
- Gilles Jacob was appointed Honorary President of the Festival in 2000.
The year 2002-2004
- In 2002, the festival was officially named the Festival de Cannes.
- In 2004, the festival's restored historical films were presented as Cannes Classics, including documentaries.
The year 2007-2010
- In 2007 Thierry Framex became General Delegate. In 2009 he expanded the festival to Buenos Aires as La Semna de Ciné del Festival de Cannes, and in 2010 he created the Cannes Court Matrices for the short film competition.
The year 2019-2020
- In 2019, Birdman director Alejandro Gonzalez Inetru led the jury panel.
- On March 20, 2020, the organizers announced the postponement of the Cannes Film Festival 2020 due to the COVID-19 epidemic; The festival was later canceled. In the year 2020, Director Spike Lee was elected to lead the jury panel.
